Frequently Asked Questions About
Braces
What are braces? How do they work?
Braces are orthodontic appliances made to move teeth into proper alignment gradually, improving both function and appearance. They consist of brackets bonded to the teeth, wires that connect the brackets, and elastics or ties that help guide tooth movement. Over time, gentle and continuous pressure shifts the teeth into more ideal positions, correcting issues such as crowding, gaps, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. At SV Orthodontics, Drs. Raman Samra and Elise Vincelette customize each treatment plan based on the patient’s needs, ensuring precise, effective, and comfortable results. Braces not only improve the look of your smile but also make it easier to clean your teeth, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Modern braces are smaller, more comfortable, and available in different styles, including traditional metal, clear ceramic, and gold Iconix® aesthetic braces. Whether you are a child, teen, or adult, braces remain one of the most reliable orthodontic solutions for achieving a healthy, functional bite and a confident smile.
Why might someone choose braces over other orthodontic options?
While alternatives like Invisalign® are popular, braces continue to be one of the most effective and versatile orthodontic treatment available. Patients often choose braces because they can address even the most complex cases of misalignment and bite problems that aligners may not fully correct. Braces work 24/7 without relying on patient compliance, making them ideal for children, teens, and adults who might forget or struggle with removable aligners. At SV Orthodontics, braces are also available in less noticeable options such as clear ceramic or gold Iconix® braces, giving patients more aesthetic choices. Braces are highly customizable, allowing us to make precise adjustments throughout treatment. For patients who prioritize effectiveness, reliability, and long-term results, braces are an excellent choice. Ultimately, the decision depends on your unique orthodontic needs, lifestyle, and preferences, and we will guide you in choosing the treatment that best fits your goals.
What types of braces does SV Orthodontics offer?
SV Orthodontics provides several types of braces to meet the unique needs and preferences of patients. Traditional metal braces remain the most common option, offering durability and effectiveness for all levels of misalignment. Gold Iconix® aesthetic braces combine strength with a stylish, champagne-gold finish that blends more subtly with the natural colour of teeth, making them an appealing choice for teens and adults who want something less noticeable than silver brackets. Clear ceramic braces provide another discreet option, using tooth-coloured or translucent brackets to reduce visibility while maintaining the same reliable mechanics as metal braces. Each type of brace has its own advantages, and the best option depends on factors like the severity of alignment issues, cosmetic concerns, and patient lifestyle. At SV Orthodontics, Drs. Raman Samra and Elise Vincelette evaluate every case individually and discuss each option with patients to help them make an informed decision. With multiple choices available, patients can select braces that suit both their orthodontic needs and personal preferences.
How do gold Iconix® aesthetic braces differ from traditional metal braces?
Gold Iconix® aesthetic braces are a stylish and discreet alternative to traditional silver-coloured metal braces. They feature small, champagne-gold brackets that blend more naturally with the colour of teeth, making them less noticeable than traditional stainless steel. Despite their sleek appearance, Iconix® braces are just as strong and effective as metal braces, allowing us to treat a wide range of orthodontic cases with precision. They are especially popular among teens and adults who want the reliability of braces without the bold metallic look. Iconix® braces also resist staining and discolouration, maintaining their polished appearance throughout treatment. At SV Orthodontics, patients can choose Iconix® braces if they want a balance of effectiveness and subtlety. This option ensures that patients achieve a straight, healthy smile while enjoying a more refined and discreet orthodontic experience.
What are clear ceramic braces? In what cases are they preferred?
Clear ceramic braces are orthodontic appliances that use tooth-coloured or translucent brackets, making them much less noticeable than traditional metal braces. They work the same way as metal braces, applying gentle pressure to move teeth into better alignment. Ceramic braces are especially popular among older teens and adults who want a more discreet treatment option but still need the reliability and precision of fixed braces. They are often recommended for patients with moderate to severe orthodontic issues that Invisalign® aligners may not fully address. However, ceramic braces do require slightly more care to prevent staining, and they may be more delicate compared to metal options. At SV Orthodontics, our team helps patients decide whether ceramic braces are right for them based on their lifestyle, aesthetic preferences, and treatment goals. For many, ceramic braces provide the perfect combination of effectiveness and subtlety, allowing them to achieve a straighter smile with confidence throughout treatment.
Which type of braces is right for me or my child?
The best type of braces depends on several factors, including the complexity of the orthodontic issue, aesthetic preferences and lifestyle. Traditional metal braces are often recommended for younger patients or those with severe bite or alignment problems, as they are highly durable and effective. Teens and adults who want a less noticeable option may prefer clear ceramic braces, which blend with natural tooth colour while providing reliable results. Gold Iconix® aesthetic braces are another excellent choice for patients seeking a stylish yet subtle alternative to standard metal brackets. During your consultation at SV Orthodontics, Drs. Raman Samra and Elise Vincelette will evaluate your smile, discuss your treatment goals, and recommend the most suitable option. Each type of orthodontic braces has unique advantages, so the decision ultimately comes down to balancing function with aesthetics. With multiple options available, patients of all ages can find a treatment that fits their needs while still achieving a healthy, beautiful, and confident smile.
How do braces straighten teeth over time?
Braces work by applying gentle, continuous pressure to teeth over an extended period. This pressure gradually moves teeth into new positions by stimulating bone remodeling around the tooth roots. Brackets are glued to each tooth, and an arch wire connects them, guiding the teeth into alignment. As the wire is changed periodically, it places specific forces on the teeth to move them into their desired positions. Elastic ties or rubber bands may also be used to correct bite issues, such as overbites or crossbites. The process is carefully monitored by Drs. Raman Samra and Elise Vincelette at SV Orthodontics to ensure safe, controlled movements that minimizes discomfort. Over the months of treatment, the bone tissue around the teeth adapts, holding the teeth in their new positions. Once braces are removed, retainers are used to help stabilize the teeth and prevent relapses. Braces are a proven orthodontic system that not only improves the appearance of your smile but also improves bite function and oral health.
How long does orthodontic treatment with braces last?
This depends on the complexity of the case and the type of corrections needed. On average, treatment lasts 18 – 24 months. Mild cases of crowding or spacing may be completed in as little as a year, while more severe bite or alignment issues may require longer treatment time. Several factors influence treatment time, including patient age, bone density, oral health, and the level of cooperation in following care instructions. At SV Orthodontics, our team creates a personalized treatment timeline for each patient and makes adjustments as needed during regular visits. Compliance with scheduled appointments, maintaining excellent oral hygiene, and avoiding damage to the braces are keys to staying on track. While treatment requires patience, the result is a healthy, well-aligned smile that can last a lifetime. Most patients find the investment of time well worth the improved confidence and oral health that braces provide.
What is the general timeline for adjustments and follow-up appointments?
Patients with braces will need regular follow-up appointments to ensure treatment progresses as planned. Typically, adjustment visits are scheduled every 4 – 8 weeks, depending on the specific case and stage of treatment. During these appointments, our team will make small changes to the arch wires, elastics, or brackets to continue guiding teeth into proper alignment. These visits are also an opportunity to check oral hygiene, monitor progress, and address any concerns, such as broken brackets or loose wires. Each appointment usually takes 20 – 40 minutes, though some may be shorter or longer depending on the adjustments needed. Consistently attending these appointments is crucial, as missed visits can delay treatment and extend the overall timeline. At SV Orthodontics, the team works to make scheduling convenient and efficient for patients of all ages. By keeping up with regular follow-ups, patients can ensure that their braces remain effective and that their smile transformation stays on schedule.
Do braces hurt when they are placed or adjusted?
It’s common for patients to experience some soreness or mild discomfort when braces are first placed or after adjustments, but this feeling is temporary and manageable. When braces are initially applied, you may feel pressure as your teeth begin adjusting to the new appliance. This sensation usually subsides within a few days. After adjustments, there can be a similar feeling of tenderness as the arch wire exerts new pressure to guide teeth into alignment. Over-the-counter pain relievers, soft foods, and orthodontic wax for any irritation can help during this period. Most patients find that discomfort lessens significantly after the first week and that each adjustment becomes easier to tolerate over time. At SV Orthodontics, our team provides tips for managing discomfort and ensures that braces are adjusted in a way that minimizes unnecessary soreness. Braces should not cause severe pain, and if you experience anything beyond normal adjustment sensitivity, the office is always available for support.
