Orthodontics isn’t one size fits all. You can choose from various orthodontic systems to meet your unique dental needs. By learning more about these systems, you’re better positioned to make an informed decision about your treatment. At SV Orthodontics in Toronto, Ontario, you can benefit from the experience and expertise of Drs. Raman Samra and Elise Vincelette, who will guide you to the best orthodontic system for you.
For many years, braces have been the traditional means of straightening crooked teeth. Today, Invisalign clear aligners offer a viable alternative. For those who are unfamiliar with either of these systems, Drs. Samra and Vincelette explain the differences here.
Both braces and Invisalign are effective orthodontic systems. However, there are differences in their application and how they work for you. The following are the differences between the two.
Traditional metal braces can easily be detected on teeth. Ceramic braces are less so but still noticeable, as they still require brackets and wires. In contrast, Invisalign’s translucent, plastic aligners blend in with teeth, making them practically invisible when you smile or speak.
Braces consist of metal or ceramic brackets bonded to your teeth for the duration of your treatment. A metal wire is threaded through these brackets, gently shifting your teeth into alignment. This system makes it slightly more difficult to keep your teeth clean, and certain foods are also prohibited. Invisalign eliminates these inconveniences by making its aligners removable for eating and oral hygiene.
Braces tend to have more emergencies, which can cause discomfort if the wire inadvertently pokes your gums and cheeks. Invisalign aligners are composed of smooth, thermoplastic material with no rough edges to irritate gum tissues. Drs. Samra and Vincelette will customize aligners for your use to ensure they fit snugly and comfortably over your teeth.
Braces require more diligent oral hygiene to keep your teeth clean. You’ll need to brush and floss meticulously to avoid plaque buildup that can lead to cavities. With Invisalign, you can remove the aligners for brushing and flossing, giving you greater freedom to keep your mouth clean throughout your treatment.
Braces will gradually straighten your teeth as they’re cemented in place for the duration of your treatment. You’ll see Dr. Samra or Dr. Vincelette regularly to continue aligning your smile. As Invisalign aligners can be removed, you must wear them as instructed (20 to 22 hours daily). Your compliance will determine the success of your treatment. Drs. Samra and Vincelette will monitor you to ensure progress is being made in achieving your smile goals.
