Orthodontic treatment with either Invisalign or traditional metal braces, offer many benefits. While most people think of orthodontic treatment simply as a way of correcting the alignment of their teeth, they do have other uses. Dr. Samra and Dr. Vincelette of SV Orthodontics in Toronto, Ontario, can fill you in on how braces and Invisalign are being used to improve smiles and correct minor abnormalities that sometimes affect how your mouth functions. Each type of orthodontic treatment modality has unique benefits so it’s important to find out which would work best for you.
One of the biggest problems associated with crooked teeth is the inconsistencies of the bite pattern. When the bite is off, it can result in abnormal wear on the surface of the teeth. Over time, this can impact how you chew your food. Undergoing orthodontic treatment with braces or Invisalign can help bring your bite pattern into proper alignment and prevent your teeth from being damaged.
As children grow, more and more teeth come in. In most situations, there is adequate room for all their teeth to come in comfortably. There are circumstances, however, where a child’s jaw may not be big enough to accommodate all of their teeth. If this occurs, the orthodontist may recommend the removal of one or more baby or adult teeth. Orthodontic treatment with Invisalign or braces is then used to align the remaining teeth and correct the bite into an ideal position.
Braces and Invisalign are also used to create space if a child’s teeth are overcrowded. During the course of treatment, the orthodontist makes space to accommodate all of the adult teeth into the mouth using different orthodontic mechanics. Braces and Invisalign can also be used to shift teeth that are causing pain in the temporomandibular joint. This is sometimes caused when a patient grinds their teeth while they sleep due to incorrect bite relationships.
Treatment plans will vary from one patient to another. Mild cases may only require that braces or Invisalign be worn for 9 to 18 months. Severe cases may take up to 36 months for a treatment plan to be completed. By closely monitoring your progress, Drs. Vincelette and Samra can adjust your treatment plan as needed to ensure you achieve the desired results.
For most patients, there are two primary options when it comes to orthodontic treatment. You can choose the traditional metal braces or opt for the Invisalign clear aligner trays if the orthodontist thinks you are a good candidate. Dr. Samra and Dr. Vincelette can explain the benefits of both options and help you make an informed choice. New patients must call (416) 213-6646.
