As a parent, you want the best for your child, including a healthy, confident smile. While braces are often associated with the teenage years, many parents are surprised to learn that orthodontic evaluations can and should begin much earlier. At SV Orthodontics, Drs. Raman Samra and Elise Vincelette specialize in early age orthodontic care, helping guide young smiles as they grow.
If you’re unsure whether your child needs early consultation or treatment, here are five commonly asked questions from parents just like you:
Early age orthodontic treatment, also known as interceptive orthodontics, involves evaluating and potentially treating dental or jaw issues in children as young as 7. By this age, enough permanent teeth have usually erupted for our team to assess your child’s bite, jaw development, and tooth alignment. An early evaluation does not always mean immediate treatment, but it allows the orthodontist to monitor growth and intervene at the right time.
Parents should watch for signs such as mouth breathing, difficulty chewing, thumb sucking, speech problems, crowded or spaced teeth, and jaws that shift or make sounds. These symptoms may indicate developmental issues that are easier to treat while your child’s mouth is still growing. A timely visit to our practice can help catch and address these issues before they become more serious.
In some cases, waiting is fine. However, early treatment can prevent more severe problems from developing later. For instance, correcting jaw alignment or guiding permanent teeth into better positions early may reduce the need for more invasive procedures, like extractions or surgery, in the future. We use a conservative approach—recommending early treatment only when it offers long-term benefits.
Early orthodontic treatment may involve appliances like expanders, limited braces, or space maintainers. These tools are designed to correct jaw growth, guide erupting teeth, and create room for future permanent teeth. Treatment is highly personalized and may be done in two phases—Phase 1 for early intervention and Phase 2 later, when all adult teeth have come in.
Today’s orthodontic techniques are designed to be gentle and child-friendly. While some discomfort is normal when appliances are adjusted, children typically adapt quickly. Our team takes extra care to ensure your child feels comfortable and supported during every step of the process. Education, encouragement, and parental involvement all play a role in making treatment a positive experience.
